Traditional toys
Wednesday, December 24th, 2008“What should we select for the children?” This is a question that plagues many parents as the holiday season approaches. Children’s toys is a huge market and the majority of it is controlled by the characterless “toy sheds” outside of most towns. It’s a far cry from the traditional toy stores of half-a-century ago, and so is the range of toys sold.
Today’s toys are mainly made in China, which has quickly gained power in the manufacturing business. Many manufacturers were quickly established to provide cheap toys to the budget conscious consumer. A lot of manufacturers took their business to China because the labor is cheaper there. When Mattel decided to outsource the work and manufacturing of the toys they learned the hard way that the toys were not as quality as they wanted. In 2007, Mattel had to recall several million toys due to the poor manufacturing. More traditional toys have been shifted back into the market due to these scares. Quality wooden toys have grown in popularity, and as a consequence there are now more independent toy sellers than before. Toys crafted out of wood are becoming more and more popular because they are well-made, last a long time, and are made with renewable resources. Considering todays financial situation and the stresses it is causing various manufacturers, it appears that the traditional wooden toy just might turn out to be stronger in the face of economic crisis. In addition to years of service providing an excellent value for the money, parents will appreciate the fact that they are buying a well made toy for their child.
Instead of driving to the plastic toy superstore this Christmas, why not try your local toy shop and buy a toy that will entertain your children and provide genuine value for the money.
